THIS POST IS WRITTEN BY A GUEST BLOGGER
Misogynoir is a term coined by the scholar Moya Bailey which means, misogyny that is directed towards Black Women where race and gender both play a role in the bias. She created the term in 2010 to address the misogyny directed towards Black Women in American visual and popular culture. I think as Black Women we can see how certain celebrities whether it be Lizzo, Nicki Minaj or Megan Thee Stallion are treated and since these women are accessible Black Women, when they are attacked it oftentimes shows a hidden contempt for the everyday Black Woman.
I was motivated to speak on this topic after watching an old episode of the Real Housewives of Atlanta and Porsha Williams was at a 70’s themed party wearing an afro and I thought to myself, “wow she looks very pretty” so I wanted to write about things pertaining to Black Women and our choices when it comes to hair & beauty.
In this post, I will be discussing how I became a Black Woman who rejected her conditioning and became a woman who doesn’t value men based on race. Just to put it out there, I don’t believe in Black Women pedestaling any race of men as a group or when it comes to choosing a partner as I believe that there are so many more important factors to consider when seeking a husband.
I was inspired to write this blog post because of an Instagram video I saw by the UK based cultural commentator Zeze Millz. In the video, she is questioning why the producers of Love Island don’t send men into the villas that find Black Women attractive? (because they clearly exist).
Before discussing the topic at hand, I would like to put a disclaimer that we are obviously not talking about every single Black Woman that has touched the villa but we do see some patterns in terms of being picked last especially during the 1st episode. Although I am UK based, I am sure that viewers from the US, Australia and South Africa will be interested in my conclusion.
